Olde English Bulldogge 101: the Basic to Know About This Dog
Olde English bulldogge first appearance in history are not fully documented. Though it is believed that the first breed of this dog came about around the 16th century in England. Olde English Buldogge is thought to be the early ancestors of most bulldog breeds today including the popular English bulldogs and the American bulldogs.
Its name originated from the early sport it is used; the bull baiting. Bull baiting was a popular sport in the 1800 and requires agile and courageous dogs which the Olde English Bulldogge provides. Bulls are stake out and several bulldogges attack the staked bull. Unlike most popular bulldog breeds today where are somewhat lazy, this type of bulldogs are physically active. Unfortunately, there was a move to outlaw this “barbaric” sport and the law was finally passed in the middle of the 19th century prohibiting the bull baiting activities.
This move lead to the decline of Olde English Bulldogges as its main purpose was gone. Years after the prohibition of bull baiting, its number declined to almost extinction. Dogs shows though call for more exotic breeds and this leads to the revival of Olde English Bulldogge. Others tried to get away from its aggressive temperament it has as a bull baiter and toned them down. the current breed of bulldogs nowadays are the combination of the Olde English Bulldogge and the pug. The modern English and American bulldogs are the products of this genetic manipulations which is the reason why it is now tamer but with a lot of genetic anomalies.
The present Olde English Bulldogge cannot traced its original bloodline. Rather, it is a product of another genetic manipulation to reconstruct this lost breed. Many genetic crosses were done by the breeders to produce current stock that can closely resemble the old one.
Through careful selection of breeds, a close Olde English Bulldogge is now available in the market. Unlike most bulldogs, this type are much healthier and physically active following its supposedly ancestors. Though the breeding process is not yet perfected it, it is the goal of most breeders that this type will be free to most genetic anomalies afflicting the bulldog breeds.
